Sleepy Hollow

Over the weekend we took a little day trip up to the legendary Sleepy Hollow, and explored the infamous old churchyard, dutch church, and bridge site from Irving's halloweeny classic. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in America, and absolutely breathtaking. It was the perfect halloween backdrop, with the bare black, twisted branches, the bright fall leaves, and all the quintessential ornate old mausoleums, tombs, monuments, and headstones.

Unfortunately the bridge from the tale isn't standing anymore, but there is a small wooden footbridge around the right area for visitors to come and enjoy the scenery and revel in the novelty. We also found Washington Irving's headstone and couldn't resist taking classic hokey pictures.

a man working in the churchyard informed us that this was the grave of THE Katrina from the story:

and he said this open space of grass is where the headless horseman's body is rumored to be buried:

  18. oh my goodness i love this! the pictures are so pretty. and as usual, i am obsessed with your hair. p.s. remember that one time you went to the ice castles in midway last winter? i was the awkward girl who came with david, freaked out when you got in the car and it was you aka Kitsune-Kun, and tripped into your husband (i STILL can't believe that happened). anyway, just introducing myself and finally coming out as a closet stalker for the last year. I hope NY is treating you well!
