Halloween Reads

So it seems there are a few fellow bookworms out there- does anyone have some good suggestions for some classic Halloweeny novels/ short stories? Last year I read Dracula during October, which was a really great read (but a disappointingly boring film). I really enjoyed the epic story and gothic imagery, and it made me wish so badly I could have read it in a time where it wasn't so obvious already it was going to be a book about vampires. I would have loved to have been genuinely shocked and terrified like its original audience. I really recommend it if you haven't read it yet.

The year before that I read Turn of the Screw and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, before that Something Wicked This Way Comes, and I've already read the really obvious ones like Frankenstein and Edgar Alan Poe's stuff. What other things have you guys read that get you in the Halloween mood? (I'm more interested in classic horror than in any really dark or gorey stuff)

  2. I loved Dracula and would love to visit Whitby one Halloween! Last year I read The Woman in Black by Susan Hill. I also like to read Rebecca and The Birds by Daphne du Maurier this time of year.
    I enjoy reading your blog!

  3. Delightful photos!

I was in a production of Dracula two years ago, so I read it for research's sake. I never considered Dracula my cup of tea, but I ended up really enjoying it! (Thought the film was boring too). Not horror, but this time of year makes me think of To Kill a Mockingbird, since the final climax takes place on Halloween.

  4. These pictures are INCREDIBLE! Creepy books are my jam. How about The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson or Rosemary's Baby?

  5. Seconding the Haunting of Hill House. Also, I Am Legend. Trust me, it's perfection.

    What about Shelley's Frankenstein?

  7. This is wonderful! I would recommend Macbeth and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde! Or maybe Grimm's stories. There's a cool graphic novel version out there!

  11. Oh my goodness this post is so cute! I'm a big fan of watching Shutter Island around Halloween- even though it isn't Halloween-y, it's one of my favorite thriller/dramas!

  12. First, this is a gorgeous work of art! Second, I highly recommend House of Leaves. Helter Skelter too, if you want some gritty nonfiction.

  14. If you haven't read it, Stephen King's The Shining scared the living daylights out of me. Perhaps it's a bit obvious, but it's honestly still my favourite scary novel to this day. I also second the House of Leaves recommendation above. So many wonderful, creepy little details in that book.

  15. Maybe not about terror per se, but scary in its own ways, I would say "The Metamorphosis" by Frank Kafka, have you already read it? It maybe more a fantastic-with a monster-philosophical novel :P It is short but a wonderful read and reread.
