snow day

IMG_4475

You guys. It finally snowed. I mean like real full-on white fluffy flakes that stayed on the ground. This is the first time this has happened since I've moved to New York, and it's a big deal to me for two reason. First, I got this really cute 'hot dog' hat and mittens combo for christmas, and I got it into my head that I wanted to photograph them together with a snow flurry. Of course, it never turned out in Utah- we were always busy or without a camera when it was actually snowing, and I was too picky about my vision to take any photos with clear skies. Then we came back to New York, and no snow to speak of.

Second, when it snows it feels warmer outside, so I could finally not wear my ugly down coat that I am sick to death of. The stars aligned for my trivial whims today, and although it might be for ridiculous reasons, I was really exited to try and get some nice shots of my christmas present in action- with a winter ensemble that didn't make me cringe, and also kept me warm enough. score score score. also, I finally got to test out my winter boots I got this year for the 'bad new england winters' I kept hearing about. also also, the most important thing- snow is beautiful. just so breathtakingly beautiful.

Ryan and I took a nice walk through Riverside Park, which is only about a 2 minute walk from our house. Everything was completely blanketed and the flakes were still coming down thick. Dusk was approaching, so the daylight had a nice glow, and after a little bit the light-posts flickered on and cast an ethereal aura over the whole place with their warm orbs. It's my favourite time of day, when the city lights come on before the sun is all the way down, and the natural and manmade hues blend and affect the atmosphere.

I should have taken a more close up shot of the hat and mittens- I think it's hard to tell from these photos, but they both have a cute little matching face in black thread, with ears in beige thread. I really like how cutesy and distinct they look while remaining subtle enough. I'm usually not one for matchy matchy things, but these really felt like they had to go together, and as soon as I saw them on ASOS back in september I knew they were the one thing I wanted for christmas, and I was really excited to receive them. I appreciate the little details, and how understated the faces are. I also really like rust. It's usually my favourite colour, as long as deep midnight blue isn't kicking it out for a while.

It's so amazing how much snow can transform the feeling of a space. Just yesterday, I hated being outside. I couldn't stand the drab, stark atmosphere, the colourless, deadscape, and the biting cold. It seemed like such a rewardless effort to try and find something worth noticing or capturing. On days like today when the world totally shifts, I feel like I'd be willing to weather anything to be able to take it all in and freeze some beautiful memories. I sure hope this magic sticks around for a while.

Also on the way home, we walked through columbia campus and they still have their holiday lights up, which complimented the snowflakes perfectly. I just live for this kind of crap, ok?

  1. I love snow as it's falling! It's so beautiful and magical. Once it's been on the ground and it's brown from car, it's gross and spring can come anytime. :P Love your hat/mittens!!

People Tree is one of my favourite companies as they're fair trade and have a great ethos, I hadn't realised they also sold through asos

  7. I have Timberland boots for the winters, too! I love that they aren't too snow-boot looking like Totes boots are. They still look like fashionable riding boots...except they're waterproof and durable! :) This snow was just TOO MUCH...we got 33 inches!!

  10. I'm seriously regretting not taking of our recent snowfall here in London to get a few shots. But, as you found, sometimes you're just too busy enjoying yourself and the sights of the snow to be bothered with working out outfit shoots! Your snow looks wonderful! And I love your boots.

  22. I just love this kind of crap! Everyone does! It's why Pinterest exists, lol.

We have not had a single flake of snow in Seattle this winter. The past few years we've been getting at least one good snow, but no such luck, so far. I know my husband is happy about that, tho.

Anyway, the shots are all gorgeous. It's hard to take a bad one when you're surrounded by all that beauty.

Aaah I've been meaning to ask you for suggestions of nice things to doo/see in Tokyo!
We are going from May 28th to June 13th. Staying the first 5 nights in Kyoto, 3 nights in Osaka (from Osaka we're taking a day trip to see Super Station Master Tama in Wakayama!) and finally 7 nights in Tokyo. It would be cool if you were there around that time :)
