Heading up to Tohoku

What we did:

We woke up and spent a nice morning taking in our surroundings and enjoying our view of the cityscape. Then we packed up our smaller bags and headed for the train station to catch a bullet train up to Tohoku, way up north from us. Ryan lived up in Sendai for a while, and since he had a week before the internship started, we thought it would be nice to go visit for a few days. It was about a 4 hour trip. We stocked up on some great snacks from the Family Mart and made our merry little way up the island at lightning speed.

What we ate:

Mikan zelly (fruit slices in fruit juice gelatin), chocolate mushrooms(chocolate tops and cookie/cracker stems), and a banana flavoured yogurt drink.

Dango ( steamed rice flour balls, toasted and dipped in a sweet and savoury sauce), mushi pan (steamed cream flavoured cake), and orange juice that tastes really different from tropicana.

IMG_1869

curry pan- japanese curry surrounded by bread with a crispy outer layer.

showing the miraculously dense, spongy, soft interior of the mushi pan- my all time favourite Japanese treat so far. last time I was in Japan I think I might have bought one every day...

We took the train and a bus out to a little mountain town in the middle of nowhere where Ryan found an Onsen (hot spring resort) he really wanted to visit. That deserves its own post though, so I'll leave that for later and end this for now, lest the photo overload become too wearisome for your scroll mussels.

Love from Japan,

Kathryn
